Jesus: The Believer’s Inheritance

  It is fascinating to observe when people talk about inheritance, ones mind would immediately cater properties, wills, houses, jewelries, and other material things. All of which are centered on material temporal things.   In 1 Peter 1:4 , although The Apostle Peter used the term “inheritance” once in his letter, Apostle Paul on the other hand, mentioned this term in his letters several times. ( Eph_1:14 , Eph_1:18 , Eph_5:5 , Col_3:24 ,) But what is so significant about this particular emphasis of Peter? After all, he made a brief description of the inheritance (verse 4-5) a believer will obtain now that he is part of God’s family.   The term “inheritance” is not something new among Jewish ears. Review: How God saves us not on the basis of our own righteousness or merit, “but according to His own mercy.”

Message: “Stay Committed”

  1. “[I]t is a trustworthy statement”— that is, the Gospel of Jesus Christ (see 3:3-8) is a message that can be relied upon and believed, for it is true. 
  2. “[I]nsist on these things”— to insist is a compound word in the original which means to “constantly establish”— “constantly” because the Gospel of Jesus Christ remains the same. It is permanent. Therefore, be steadfast and faithful in proclaiming the truth!
  3. “[S]o that those who have believed in God may be careful to devote themselves to good works”— the devotion to good works is the RESULT of being saved (NOT for obtaining salvation, for salvation is by grace). The good works referred to here is not the “occasional” performance of a good deed, but the good works that characterize a godly life as a result of having been saved by God through Christ. It is a life that proclaims, in word and deed, the Gospel.
  4. “These things are excellent and profitable for people”— that is, people benefit from the steadfast, faithful proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ 
  5. “But avoid foolish controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels about the law, for they are unprofitable and worthless”— Timothy was similarly exhorted by the apostle Paul to NOT teach any different doctrine or to NOT have anything to do with debates that breed quarrels (See 1 Tim.1:3-4, 2 Tim. 2:23-26). 
  6. “As for a person who stirs up division, after warning him once and then twice (cf. Matthew 18:15-20), have nothing more to do with him, knowing that such a person is warped and sinful; he is self-condemned”— speaks of having nothing to do with one who proclaims another gospel, a message that is contrary to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. See Gal. 1:6-9. 

In Sum: “Right and proper application of biblical truth produces right living”— that is, the genuine believer clings to biblical truth that results in a godly life that steadfastly and faithfully proclaims the Gospel Message of our Lord Jesus Christ. 

Remember Christ’s spoken words in Matthew 5:13-16: 

“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet.”

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”

Today’s Message in a Nutshell–“From Theocracy to Monarchy”, a study of 1 Samuel The book of 1 Samuel takes us from the birth of Samuel, the last and greatest judge of Israel, to the anointing of Israel’s most beloved king, David. We find in this book a transition from “theocracy to monarchy” as God’s people chose to be “like all the nations” by demanding that a human king rule over them (1 Samuel 8:5), an outright rejection of the King of kings who had led them from Egypt to the Promised Land. Sadly, a number of believers today follow the error of God’s people in Samuel’s time. We reject God’s rule over us.  Rather than following God’s way, we instead embrace the ways of the world. The Scriptures, therefore, remind us to not love this world (1 John 2:15-17) or be conformed to it (Romans 12:1-2).  Rather, we should “set our affections on things above” (See Colossians 3). The Matter of Slander - Notes on James 4:11-12

  The particular subject of James in James 1:36 and James 3:1-11 is the tongue. He again returns to this subject in James 4:11-12.  Based on our prior studies, it is clear that “what you say flows from what is in your heart” (Luke 6:45). In James’ imperative to “not slander one another,” the heart of the problem, as one has aptly put it, “is the problem of the heart.”  The term “slander” speaks of having the intent of defaming or of falsely accusing another. Note that in 1 Peter 2:12, the apostle Peter speaks of slander by unbelievers against believers, which is to be expected, since unbelievers speak from a heart that is fallen in Adam. In contrast, James, in 4:11-12, confronts believers who are slandering fellow believers. Ponder on Matthew 7:1-5, which calls for believers to not condemn fellow believers.
