We as human beings express our feelings in a variety of ways. When hurt, we cry; upset, we shout; happy, we smile. And when we start to sing or hum a tune, write a poem, a letter, or daydream, people say we must be in love. Indeed, when we’re in love, creativity flows from the heart.
Song of Solomon in the Hebrew Scriptures is entitled “Song of songs,” which is Solomon’s. It is a love song which by its title means the best of songs. It is a song of love between lovers.
Song of Solomon reveals to us our desire as human beings to love and be loved. In fact, prior to the fall, God said, “it is not good for man to be alone” (Genesis 2:18). Therefore, God created woman (Genesis 2:18-25).
The book can be divided into three parts, each of which is an important component of the marital relationship: Courtship (1:2-3:5); Wedding (3:6-5:1); and Marriage (5:2-8:14).
Two important principles can be learned from Song of Solomon. First, the marriage relationship as designed by God is between a man and a woman. One who engages in a same-sex relationship is sinning against God (See Genesis 19:1-29, Leviticus 18:22 and Romans 1:18-32).
Second, purity as well as physical intimacy as designed by God should only be enjoyed in the marriage relationship. According to Hebrews, “[m]arriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral” (Hebrews 13:4, NIV). Our society today teaches that a couple can go through a stage called “living in together” to know whether their relationship will work before they proceed to marriage. more and more also believe that it is alright to have sex prior to marriage. The result?– unwanted pregnancies, abortion, illegitimate children, broken families. More often than not, the unmerciful killing of unborn babies the breakdown of families are the result of immoral sex.
It is important to remember: sex is a gift of God given only to the husband and the wife to enjoy within the boundaries of marriage and to fulfill the Lord’s command to bear and multiply (Genesis 1:26-28).
How are you today? Are you in a marriage relationship? Is it thriving or failing? Remember, we all need the grace of God. I believe it is possible that even with the challenges we face in our marriage relationship, we can still enjoy each others’ love and companionship through the years. Divorce is never a solution (Genesis 2:23-25; 1 Corinthians 13:4-7; Ephesians 5:21-33; 1 Peter 3:1-7).
Are you unmarried? My prayer is for you to remain morally and physically pure in the fear of God. According to the writer of Hebrews, “God will judge the adulterer and the immoral” (Hebrews 13:4). If you have never come to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ, I urge you to come to Him for He is your only hope to have eternal life in Heaven.
